Learn to appreciate

Sometimes, we take things and people for granted.

We're stingy with compliments.
We don't actively say thank you.
We might not know how to show our appreciation to people.

Actually, a simple action or word will do. Is this very difficult? For some people, it's peanuts. For some, it's not that they don't want to show appreciation, it's just difficult for them to show it as they don't know how. For some, they don't even give a damm. These people should learn how to appreciate so that people will start to appreciate them too.

On a Friday in May, I came across a client. I was explaining to her what follow up she needs to do over the phone. After introducing myself and when I was about start to go into the topic, she stopped me and asked me,

'From your voice, I assume you're down with flu or you're sick?'
'...Yes Mdm Goh, I'm down with flu.'
'Oh...I'm sorry to hear that, please take care, you should've taken MC today.'
'I'm okay, ....(and I continued to explain to her the follow up she needs to do)'

(As I was explaining, I have no idea why suddenly my cough starts to worsen and I was coughing madly each time I finish a sentence. It became so bad that I have to excuse myself and put Mdm Goh on 'Hold' mode.)

(She didn't feel unhappy but kept saying...)

'It's okay, go have some water and take some lozenges.'
'I'll do the talking, you can just cough and listen to me. You'll have to cough it out in order to feel better. Go on.'
'Must take care, your cough is very serious.'

(Her voice was so caring and I felt that she was really very concerned. I'm embarrassed but felt grateful at the same time. I drank some water while on 'Hold' mode and felt better. I resumed to explain to her what she needs to do.)

'Thank you so much Shi Hui, please take care and I will email you the application form on Monday. Please take care. You can go try Have it with warm water and it will really help your cough. Alright, don't talk so much, take care. Bye bye!'

I was really surprised by what she said. What I just did is basically part of my job and yet she is so thankful about it.

On Monday when I came to work, I received 2 emails from our call centre. Mdm Goh called to the hotline to check if I have received the application form to ensure that I do the follow up and also another call to thank me for being so helpful. I also received a miss call from her too, on my desk phone, and returned a call. I spoke to her and then got to know that she thought that I will be on MC today so afraid that no one will tend to her application form that she has submitted. I told her that we have received the application form and will process it accordingly. Also, I thanked her for calling in to thank me as she don't really have to do that. She really appreciates what I did (though I still think that whatever I did is something really simple) and kept thanking me.

Although I think this Mdm Goh is a little dramatic but her appreciation towards the people around her is really something that we should learn. Learn to appreciate others, so that other will appreciate you and this in turn will make the place around you a happier place to be and live in.

04/01/2015 - 07/01/2015: Hong Kong Trip 2015

The view I see while I was on the way up to the Peak.
Hong Kong style breakfast!!!

My very first trip to Hong Kong.

Language is a problem but not a major one, though I kept repeating my orders just to make sure they understood me throughout the trip.

As expected, there's nothing much for me to buy for this trip since it's the winter season.

Although a lot of people said that there is no need to go Hong Kong for so many days, I beg to differ. There's actually quite a handful of places to visit, especially so when you can travel to Macau. One day to Macau is definitely not enough as there are a lot of heritages there for you to visit. From Macau, you can also travel to Shen Zhen and Zhu Hai since they are just a causeway away. With one air ticket and you get to visit 4 countries, it's very worth it! Also, there's a lot of good food to try in Hong Kong. Hence, the longer you stay in Hong Kong, the more food you can get to try since there's always a limit to everyone's stomach space....right?

Lastly, I find that actually, Hong Kongers are not as rude as I was expecting them to be. I have heard and read a lot of people saying that these people are rude and they don't really like PRC hence not to speak in Pu Tong Hua there. The truth is, I spoke in Mandarin most of the time and they replied me in a manner that doesn't seem to be considered rude, at least that's how I looked at it. I was expecting the worst and they turned out to be much better than I have expected they would be. Maybe I have yet to encounter one. Maybe....

I had a great time there. I won't be visiting Hong Kong very soon as I have some other countries that I want to visit too. However, I will definitely be back in Hong Kong, for the food and to explore the other parts of Hong Kong.

1st week of work

My very first TGIF...it was G-R-E-A-T!!!

I've never felt so happy for TGIF before. I can really feel the freedom I get on weekend. Unlike when I was still studying, the weekend was nothing but some more time for me to catch up my school work. Now, weekend is for me to to catch up on my sleep and to fully relax myself from work. I can really feel the difference.

First week of work.....was mentally tiring. Why? It's because I still cannot get use to waking up at 6am plus in the morning and work all the way till 6pm in the evening at night with just lunch break. I know I can have tea break but I'm still not quite comfortable with the people in my office since I'm still quite new there. Anyway, there wasn't much applications to process either. Hence, on the 4th and 5th day of work, I didn't do a lot of work. 1st and 2nd was training for me and real work started on the 3rd day of work.

Currently, I'm still working on what types of applications to approve/reject/set as incomplete as there are just too many scenarios to take into consideration. I ask my team leaders questions whenever I'm in doubt but I will feel kinda embarrassed as I will interrupt them with their work. I hope as time passed by, I will be able to work more independently and know what to do and what not to do. I quite lucky as my team leaders seem to be quite open to us asking them questions and are really willing to help us out. Not only does it applies to my team leaders, my colleagues are quite friendly too. I hope that I can become closer to them soon. Like able to chat and joke with them comfortably. I don't want them to have this impression on me that I'm super quiet, cold and etc.....and hence won't want to talk to me. :(

Jiayou Shihui, you gotta be the first to talk to them in order to not have them to have such an impression on you. JIAYOU! You can do it. Let's change for the better.

Most importantly, keep in mind that you must have a positive mindset to deal with anything in life. That will be half the job done already. Positive mindset is the way to go! JIAYOU!

And I guess I will continue to do that...
I didn't like the idea but I did it.
Everyone is doing it during lunch hour.
Welcome to the working world!!! -.- -.- -.-
